Star of the Morning
Star of the Morning
If not all that glitters is gold,
then we should be wary
of those who purport to be
as flawless as the diamond,
reflecting and refining light
through its many facets.
They may waft their perfume
to mask the sweaty odour
of the heaving masses
and draw their eager acolytes
on the path to fame.
Whilst it is true that gems
are forged in the heat and pressure
of underground, remember
that fakes are made with paste.
‘Tis also good to consider
that, while sweet aroma charms
the sense, there are plants
that attract their insect prey
through irresistible scent.
A warning then: the fallen one
was once the star of the morning.
