but summer--
with its triple digit temperatures--
has arrived,
and it is time to consider
summer myths.

Letter From the Editor

There are sun gods and goddesses in every culture. Some of them are associated with the summer solstice, which is also called Litha1. Following are some of the goddesses that are associated with summer. Some of these goddesses are also related to moon deities.

June receives its name from the Roman goddess Juno, also known as Juno Luna. She is the advocate of marriage, which is one of the reasons June is considered a good month to become engaged or get married. She is also the goddess that blessed or cursed (depending on your point of view) women with their monthly cycle.

Amaterasu is the Shinto solar goddess, who is celebrated in July, and it is from her that light comes. She is a compassionate goddess and treats those who worship her warmly. This goddess is a sister to the moon and storm deities.

Hestia is the Greek goddess of the family. Her shrine was usually found in a town's city hall. Fire from one of her established shrines was carried to the city hall in a new town.

The goddess I found most interesting was Juno, perhaps because she gave her name to June. I always wondered why so many people got married or engaged, in June and now I know. There are numerous other goddesses and gods associated with summer and the summer solstice. What other myths are associated with summer? please let me know.

One of these magical worlds, The Agoura Renaissance Pleasure Faire, is located approximately thirty miles east of Los Angeles in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Excerpt: I made the promise to take a photo of a Wyvern and demand an explanation from one ten months ago when I found out that Alexandre Yersin was wrong when he 'discovered' in 1894 that the bacterium yersinia pestis created the Bubonic Plague. It was a good assumption and very valid for his time, especially as everyone and everything was criticised as being the cause of the Black Death that occured in the 14th century. Guaranteed mass hysteria was a given for the plague that caused the death of around 25 million people. However, Yersin's explanation wasn't complete as he scientifically did not believe in the so-called mythical Wyvern. The monster I'm going on a road trip with my 2 closest friends to hunt.

Excerpt: The bench sat like a beacon to her. The iron metal weaved in and out of mystical, spell-binding circles. It looked like it had survived the test of time and held steady over the years. She stepped toward it and felt for the dagger near her hip. She didn't know if it was safe. The feel of the blade's leather hilt embraced the inside of her palm. It felt like safety, like a promise that she made to herself she was sure she would keep.
