My grandma is Cherokee proud
My Grandma is Cherokee Proud
By Lisa Noe

I grew up knowing my grandma was a Native American
She is from the Cherokee tribe, I am proud to be descended from her.
She had a hard life, people were rude and mean to her because of being what they considered as different. I loved to hear the stories she would tell about her brothers and sisters, if I recall correctly there were about thirteen in the family. She was a beautiful woman people called her Nannie, although her true name was Sarah Alice. She was a Christian of the highest standard, I was so truly proud of my mamaw.
That is what we called her. People would try to make her feel less than others because she was a native American. I will never understand that. She was a lovely lady inside and out. She had that beautiful thick black hair, brown perhaps black eyes and that wonderful dark skin.
I had always wished I would have inherited that thick hair and dark skin.
But of course I didn’t. As I looked like my father, who had blond hair, blue eyes, although he did have nice dark skin, but it just wasn’t as dark as mamaw’s. She died in 1993, I miss her greatly. My dad died in 1986. It should go without say how much I miss him. I am glad to be descended from the Native American people , They, in my mind, are a good and descent lot of people. They are kind to our earth, and to Nature. They do not waste what they use to survive. In the past, when they killed a Buffalo, They would use every single piece of it to survive, they used the meat for food. The skins for clothes, blankets, hides, for tents, and so on. They took from earth what was needed to survive and no more. I am surely proud to be part of their heritage.
