Age & Mental Illness - MHWA Topic
Task 4: Do you think or notice that getting older has an affect on mental illness?

I've never really thought about this before but I would say there's an affect. As I get older, and the pressures of life accumulate, it gets harder and harder to bounce back from things. Being under the constant pressure of having four disabled people (yes, I'm one due to PTSD) under one roof wears on my resilience and inner strength. Five years ago I had none of that.

I also notice as my husband ages, he's losing more and more mobility and function. He's wholly dependent upon me and his vulnerability scares me sometimes. He's so strong, but seeing his body fail him makes my heart hurt for him. And I know I'm less than a decade from some of that myself. Due to the car accident I was in four years ago, I know my old age will be unpleasant.

But at the end of the day, mental illness is what it is, no matter what your age. You either get on top of it or you let it win. And I for one, am staying in control of this beast, come hell or high water.
