Prompt: Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Let this quote inspire your blog entry: "Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service." Martin Luther King, Jr. There are so many ways to be of service. A million ways. We can be of service to each other every single day by looking for ways to serve others. I think our country has lost the passion we once had for serving one another. We're now focused on serving ourselves and wonder why our lives are so joyless. Serving others is to bring joy to others and by default, ourselves. Each day, I make it a point to find a way to be of service to someone. Sometimes it's my husband or my kids. Sometimes it's a stranger at the grocery store. Sometimes it's in the gas station or at a doctor's office. I open doors, I help the elderly and parents of small children. I do small kindnesses for others every day. Not because I get something, which I do, but because it's a right and kind thing to do. It's a great thing. Here's another quote I love: *To give real service, you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” ~Douglas Adams I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would have really liked Douglas Adams. I think they would have agreed on a lot on a lot of things. That's part of the internal code I try to live by each day - providing service to others. Not because it's expected. Not because a book tells me to. But because it's something I wholeheartedly believe in. What do you believe it (other than God, if you do)? I personally believe we all need something to believe in, a code if you will. Without it, we won't have a framework from which to respond to situations and others appropriately.
