Pearl Seeds:
A Metaphor for Transformation

Pearl seeds
encased in living shells,
we hear

only
oyster blood flowing.
Our minds

unmarked
by external realities,
we feel

only
the cold kiss
of mother of pear,

as our
rough edges are smoothed
to a glassy finish.

Pearl

Atom of spirit
Embedded in matter's shell
Secreting mother-of-pearl

Death's knife pries open
Matter's shell releasing the
Treasure imprisoned within

I wrote the first poem in 152 B.E. The original title was "The World Could Come to an End And We Would Never Know It"; I have no idea why I originally gave it that title. I wrote the second poem in 150 B.E.
