An Apple a Day Tools of the Trade - Ripples of Awareness

An Apple a Day

                   One bite
and the crunch is tart
and sweet.
         Earth and sky,
sweetened by the sun
infused with the waters of life.
Juice escapes
         to moisten lips
and from the orb
sticky elixir drips
                   onto the palm
to be licked off later.

Warmed by the sun
and snatched
         from a flexible limb,
how many before me
have savored the glory
         of the apple?

Some say,
         Eve was first to taste,
tempted by a serpent.
         Norse gods
credited their immortality
to the fruit.
         Ancients
cultivated orchards
grafting to ensure consistency.
Fruit of knowledge
         past and future.

Delicate, pink blossoms
         herald in Spring
and baskets of plump
red and green apples
         punctuate Fall harvest
to be devoured
         raw, baked,
                   stewed, candied
or floating in a tub.

You know what they say,
         "An apple a day …"

Footnotes: Apple trees from an apple seed will produce an entirely new apple strain. A Fuji Apple seed will not produce a Fuji apple. The only way to ensure that a Granny Smith tree will produce Granny Smith apples is to graft a piece of Granny Smith apple wood into a piece of root stalk. This technique has been practiced since the ancient Egyptians, ancient Greeks, Romans and even the Celts. That is why there are so many types of apples. Johnny Appleseed was on a mission to create new fruit when he famously spread apple seeds.

In the town where my office is located, every year we celebrate the Apple Blossom Festival with a parade, ending in the park where all manner of apple products are available and if you drive into the outskirts of town you will see beautiful orchards of apple blossoms. This is the home of Luther Burbank's Gravenstein Apple. But Golden Delicious grow here equally well.
