I Remember
I remember
attending Sunday and Vacation Bible School,
at the Southern Baptist Mission in Blackwell, Oklahoma,
and learning
that heaven was a private club
closed to all other religions
and churches
except Southern Baptist.
I remember
growing up in a lower middle class family,
of being the daughter and granddaughter
of blue collar workers
from the wrong side of the tacks.
I remember
the lessons I was taught,
through both words and actions
of others.
And I remember
stepping outside of the segregated world
of my childhood
to pursue
my own spiritual journey.
