A little sweetness on this entry.

I Would Still Love You The Same

© Jac Judy A. Campbell

Published: March 13, 2018

If I didn't know where you came from
If you had a different name
Or perhaps you were a different color
I would still love you the same.
If you lived up in the sky, or maybe in a tree,
If you could not laugh or even smile,
If your eyes they could not see.
If you could not walk upon your feet
If your fingers were your thumbs,
If you could not sing a song so gay
I would still love you the same.
If you were a little boy or
maybe someone else
If your legs they couldn't run and play
Nor could you hear or speak your name
If you did not love me, as I love you
I would still love you the same

This poet is a mother of three girls. As I read this poem it gets me thinking of loving a child with special needs. That child may not be what you expected, but you love them all the same. Having spent many years working with children with special needs, I find these children precious. I have found I have also learned a great deal about life and loving by spending time with them. There is an honesty and truth with many of these children... a bright eyed wonderfulness that 'regular' kids tend to loose as they grow older and become adults.

It also get me thinking of a piece I read that I absolutely love:

Children are gifts. I may not have any of my own, but appreciate their wonder and ways of thinking about the world. I am often amazed and it is that amazement that has me going back... that is one of the reasons I love teaching.
