I have posted my response to MHWA Mental Health Challenge and other items to this journal. |
"Invalid Item" Task 12: Write about a book you've read with a character who had a mental illness. Would you recommend the book to others? If you haven't read one, research some potential books to read where a character has a mental illness. According to the website Cracked1, there are "6 Beloved Characters That Had Undiagnosed Mental Illnesses"2. (1) In Gone With the Wind Scarlet O'Hara had Antisocial and Histrionic Personality Disorder. (2) Glinda the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz was afflicted with Sadistic Personality Disorder. (3) The Catcher on the Rye character Holden Caulfield had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. (4) Belle in Beauty and The Beast had Schizoid Personality Disorder. (5) Ariel of the Little Mermaid had issues with Disposophobia. She liked to hoard stuff. (6) Sherlock Holmes has Asperger's Syndrome. Until I found that list, I didn't think I had read any books with characters who had mental illnesses. I was wrong! I think I read at least three of those books, maybe four. Of those I read I would recommend Gone with the Wind, and The Catcher on the Rye. In fact, I think I'll have to read those books again, because I didn't think those characters had any mental illness.
