Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees

Personal Notation:
This song, from 1977 really has nothing personal that I can relate to; being a country girl at heart. I like the rhythm of the song and it reminds me of the movie Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta which it was written for. It was a time when some groups of city boys were trying to find themselves. Saturday night rolled along and they greased back their hair and went struttin' out on the city streets, thinking they were a 'hot topic' for all the women out there. It was fun.

The song is deeper than that. It speaks of hard times trying to survive the city but not seeming to get anywhere. It tells about the struggle of trying to make your way out of a dead end job, a feeling of being kicked around. Saturday night was a night to forget about all those struggles and just 'hit the town' and have a good time struttin' and dancin'.

There are several Bee Gee songs that I like, therefore that is why I picked them for my booklet.

Background:
Stayin' Alive was written specifically for the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. It represents the Disco Era. The Bee Gees sang in high falsetto style but deny that they were Disco singers; a term they did not like associated with their music. On December 4, 1977 it hit the Billboard Top 100 at #65. Eight weeks later, on January 29, 1978 it hit #1 and stayed there for four weeks. It was dethroned by Michael Jackson's Thriller.

According to a team from the University of Illinois, it has an almost perfect rhythm to help jump start a stopped heart. The Bee Gees claim that they wrote this with a beating heart in mind.

The Bee Gees had their 1st single released in Australia in 1963, "Battle of The Blue and the Grey." They left Australia for London to audition with Robert Stigwood who became their manager. They worked with Brian Epstein, The Beatles manager.

Robin Gibb was in a train accident which killed 49 people. He escaped with only cuts and bruises. He said, "Melody must dictate a song". Robin died in 2012.

Maurice Gibb was a paintball fanatic. He married Scottish singer Lulu in England on February 18, 1969. He was reportedly a heavy drinker which led to divorce in 1973. He died in 2003
