About this Newsletter

"Fantasy Newsletter (December 30, 2015)Open in new Window. discussed Mythical Monsters of the Holiday Season. This newsletter discusses some of the lessor know mythical creatures from various cultures.

Each culture and tribe
has its own rogues gallery
of mythical beasts.

Letter from the Editor

If you look into the mythology of every tribe, nation, or culture you will find unusual or weird beasts. Some of these creatures have humanoid forms, that is two arms, two legs, and a head. While others are described as a conglomeration of several different unrelated creatures.

One of the humanoid like creatures is the Aigamuxa from African mythology. This fascinating and frightening creature has eyes located somewhere on its feet rather then its head. The Aigamuxa's eyes can be located on the heels, the soles, or the in-steps of its feet, with one eye located in each foot. Another humanoid creature is the Blemmyae from either Asia or Africa. This hairy wild man has its face on its chest.

One of the conglomeration monsters from Greek myth is the Manticore. This frightening and dangerous creature walks on four legs. It has the head of a human, the tail of a scorpion, and a lion's body. Then there is the Griffin which has the is a melding of a lion and an eagle. Its front quarters are those of an eagle while its hind quarters resembles a lion.

This weeks challenge is to create your own mythical creature along with the myth that explains and describes it. The story should be 1500 words or less and submitted to the newsletter by Wednesday, February 17. If you need to do research on mythical creatures type the words mythical creatures or mythical monsters in the search box of your search engine.

Excerpt: High in the sky above a sleepy snow covered town hung a beautiful and rare full Christmas moon. A small house on Archer street put off a faint colorful glow from the lights and decorations adorning its exterior as its inhabitants slept, dreaming of the bounty of gifts awaiting them in the morning. A slight jingle could be heard as the reindeer on the roof waited impatiently for Santa to return from the final delivery of the night.

Excerpt: Marion and Theo Sorenson were visiting their grandparents who lived on the high plateau of Mt. Tinastoll in Iceland. The children loved to spend their holidays with their grandparents. They helped with the chores of the small farm which included herding the few sheep and cows to and from the grassy highlands. Marion would gather fresh milk from the cow and eggs from the chicken coop so Grandma could teach her how to bake Sweet Sarah Cookies.

Excerpt: Black trunks and bare limbs surrounded her. The woods was quiet except for the occasional hoot, scurry, or growl. The crunch of dead leaves sounded like broken glass despite her efforts of stealth. She didn’t want to be detected for fear she wouldn’t reach her destination. It was a silly thought, but she wanted nothing to happen now that she was so close. She lifted her robe to straddle fallen timber in her path. A twig snapped as she stepped. She stopped, held her breath, and listened. Nothing happened.
