IF I WAS A SANDWICH...
Recently, some old friends described themselves as being a part of the "sandwich" generation; they feel squished between their elderly parents, adult children, and grandchildren. I immediately found this amusing and challenged them. I asked if they were not more exotic than a grilled cheese or a p.b. and j.? One replied that she might be a sub because of her rolls. This led to banter about pregnancy and its unavoidable weight gain. I remember judgmental people offering me their unwanted/unsolicited advice. I was warned that three kids in the space of three years would stretch me too thin. Well, I survived and without that lean body. Maybe I've eaten one too many sandwiches; I'm certainly not a shadow of my former self. I have undoubtedly grown over the years. Wisdom can be heavy stuff; it leaves its mark. Now as to what kind of sandwich I am, I'm not too sure. I am still re-inventing myself and my tastes constantly evolve and meld. I don't think I'm an egg salad, otherwise known as the funeral sandwich to my sister, Laurie. Some might describe me as cracked and soft. I'd like to believe that I smell better than an old egg'er. Perhaps I'm a b.l.t.? Who doesn't like bacon? Who doesn't want to be liked and accepted? Dare I say I could be popular? A tomato is a cheery bright red and tasty too. It can be organic and represent every thing that is good about nurturing and savouring the earth. I can be that. The lettuce is my favourite colour, I just had to put that out there. Green represents life, growth, new beginnings, peace, harmony, so it's a positive shade. I'm a wife/mother/grandmother with a nurturing streak. I'm not a new age hippy Mother Earth type. Perhaps I'm a reuben?? This partnering of smoked meat, mustard, cheese, and sauerkraut on rye is a little different/ quirky. It has some zing. It's not a quiet sandwich nor am I known as being quiet. I could continue, but there are only so many sandwich combos. Hmmm, I wonder what cookie I am?
