Don't count the words. Write words that count!
As I wrote in a comment to Darleen:
Words... number of words...
Not as important as the writing process. I'm lyrical and cut words. I prefer short and bitter-sweet. Words drown the sweetness, hide the bitter. Short can be better. Think of a haiku and how just a few words can say what others try to say in novels.
Remember Hemenway:

Baby shoes.
Never worn.
In six words more is said than many a short story. So spend the time well. Write as much as you can. Edit later.
But never despair over word count. It's the words that count, not how many.
