Caroling, Caroling (Christmas Bells are Ringing) Nat King Cole Each year I hear the ringing bells. Each source a different story tells and yet, it still remains unclear why they celebrate this time of year. In pagan days on winter's night they kept the evil out of sight. Soon they tolled to call the people ringing from the church's steeple. In early wars the ringing sound would signal to those on the ground that animosity would cease and for a time, there would be peace. Now soldiers of a different fashion ring bells seeking our compassion over kettles painted red to give the poor their daily bread. The bells adorning Santa's sleigh ring merrily. "Up and away," he shouts as children dream at night of presents and reindeers in flight. The jingle of a shop keep's door is not the end. There must be more to this holiday of joy and light in remembrance of that Holy Night. The bells that ring remind us each that long ago, He came to teach us to have faith in God and love here on the earth and up above. Each year I hear the bells in song, a joyful noise above the throng, which proclaim the heavenly birth of Jesus, son of God, on earth. May peace be with you; my peace I give unto you. |
