Notes on the religions, cultures, and histories of Heresy: The Book of Mammon |
The Cycle of Norns In norse mythology the nine worlds rest upon the boughs of the tree known as Yggdrasil. That's right, it is more than just a world of warcraft name, Yggdrasil is mentioned in the Gylfaginning, Poetic Edda, and Prose Edda and is the basis for pagan cosmology. In Heresy: The Book of Mammon, Yggdrasil is of a similar concept and design but it does have several differences. Yggdrasil itself is an actual tree (not like world of warcraft) Wherein the world does rest upon its boughs, in a sense. Midgard is the world of the living both in Norse Mythology as well as Arlian Cosmology. Midgard itself was constructed by Odynn as a gift to his three children; Azaal, Azul, and Astarte. This is the basis of Heresy, which delves beyond the christian principle of one god and one devil, and combines two religions of Paganism, and Christianity to create the one supreme truth. Odynn created the world of Arlia, as well as heaven and hell. Each of which were a gift to his children. It was the law of the all father Odynn that with each new era, a new child will reign on Heaven, Arlia, and Hell. This created the Cycle of Norns; as spoken in the Tome of Norns: The world was created Just as summer changes to winter back to summer and light into dark back to light so to must life change to death back to life. And each era brings the death of old and the life of new. The Norns reigned during their eras long before history First Azul, then Azaal, then Astarte. Astarte was a greedy daughter, and disrupted that cycle when she did not recede her reign. That is when it began. Azul and Azaal fought her but she had the strength of the men of the earth, and the beasts of the earth. The human named Tyr loved her and they birthed a son, Baalberith. He wished to create a world for her, and he named it Annwvyn. Odynn was angered by this, and he tried to kill Tyr, but he could not. Tyr and Astarte went to the world of Annwvyn, and their son Baalberith remained behind. The men of the earth attacked their rulers in Heaven and Hell, And Odynn took their powers from them. He granted only the Architects the gift, and commanded them to build the engines. It was so that Azul and Azaal retreated to Heaven and Hell, and the engines locked them in their realms For eternity, and it was the greatest gift of all, that men reigned on Arlia as they saw fit. |
