A book, a flower and a tomato His visit to his aunt’s place, during summer vacation, was a welcome break to Jack. After retiring as a high school teacher, she bought a cottage in a quiet suburb. She loved tending her little garden, which to Jack looked pretty as a picture of colorful flowers. Coming from the big city, it was pretty awesome for Jack, that the lane had hardly any vehicular traffic, not even that of the inevitable fire trucks. On a fine morning, Jack took his book to the back yard, to read and relax under the shade of a Magnolia. As he lay and opened the book, a cream colored, scented flower fell on the page. A romantic at heart, Jack jotted down the lines, “My lovely blossom You found your way Into my bosom. Your velvety touch Your fragrance fine Will stay with me Forever fresh.” “Jack, where are you?” “I’m in the back garden Aunt Rose.” “Could you get me some tomatoes dear?” “Sure, Aunt.” Jack went to the patch of tomato plants. “There is only one red one Aunt. The others are all green.” “Ok” “What shall I do with it, Aunt Rose?” “Eat it son!” Jack plopped the ripe, red tomato into his mouth, and chewed it, enjoying the sweet pungency. Word Count : 223 |
