Enga mellom fjella: where from across the meadow, poems sing from mountains and molehills. |
The empty vessel Empty the vessel. Set it out to dry. This desert land bears scars of glacial flood, the scourge of volcanic blasts that wrack it time after time. Its brown fades beige when seen through mist, this gray blanket that does little to quench its thirst as sagebrush frosts and glistens. What humans that dare to call this wasteland home do so in a hush, their presence deemed ephemeral as car lots rusts and roads, mere wrinkles, wait to be smoothed again come fiery ash and the flash of fearsome flood. The empty vessel, once set out to dry, awaits to be filled, recycled. © 2008 Kåre Enga [165.358] 2008-11-28 "Emptying the vessel" was the prompt. The landscape of Eastern Washington the inspiration. Give me a cheese or fruit no one else has heard of ... I'll try it. Same with languages, religions, customs. True, I prefer to observe rather than participate. Same with people. Odd folks tend to be drawn to me ... as are dogs (I'm a cat person) and teenagers (argh! ). So ... hanging around with 'normal' salt-of-the-earth people really helps me stay grounded and keeps me from becoming snobbish or arrogant. It comes naturally to me though and fits into my comfort zone. I have learned much from people who are very different from me. Oddly, I don't do as well among the educated and literary folk. I feel left out of their cliques. And, truth-be-told, I am awkward in their presence. So, I collect dreams, natural images, real people and pet every pet that lets me. Then ... I write about them .
