WATT'S GNUS: Gay marriage in California! Yay! I REALLY don't care how "straight", "moral" or "conservative-correct-Christian" some folks claim to be. The truth is no one is forcing anyone to marry someone they don't want to. Get over it! If I want to marry a camel LET ME BE! It won't be your camel ... guaranteed. (and don't bother to comment that you don't understand sarcasm ... gay and lesbian humans have put up with veiled hatred in its many nefarious forms for ... like ... forever!) I do not believe in "majority rules" when it come to basic human rights. 51% does not get to deny me my religion, my race, determine who I marry, what I wear. 90% (or a "super-majority") maybe, but minorities need protection from over-zealous majorities. Without that protection there is internal warfare. Can Rhode Island vote to deny Mormon marriages? With over 65% Catholic, they should and could deny any marriage not recognized by the Pope (bless his little heart). Utah can then vote to deny Jews, Muslims and anyone who isn't Mormon the same rights. There are counties in Utah that are over 95% LDS. Maybe we-all should exterminate Native Americans? After-all majority rules ... oh, that's right ... that's what the BIA schools were supposed to accomplish; rats, they nearly did. And don't be caught BLACK in Idaho ... they run away scaaaiiiiired. Either there are basic human rights we can agree on or we are doomed to constant warfare and eventual extermination. Many other species can only pray for that day and in the end would sigh with relief. Until the U.S. Supreme Court decided against Virginia, in 1967, inter-racial marriages were not recognized in that state. Obviously it was against their collective sense of morality. All three candidates for prez talk about "State Rights" but there is something called Human Rights that holds us all to a higher standard. I'm not impressed with politicians who can't stand up for what's right. "De Cider Man", the present occupant of the American throne, at least makes decisions and doesn't shilly-shally about. I think he lies ... I think he's wrong ... but at least he is resolute. I'll grant him that one virtue. What is truly weird is that in New York straight folks have great difficulty getting divorced; gay folks can't get married. Must be a leftover from the Irish Catholic days ... even Ireland has moved forward. (There was a recent Yahoo! article about a woman who couldn't convince 10 men that she needed out of her marriage to a very wealthy man ... guess money and having bigger balls counts for sumpting ... doncha think?) So ... I should write a whole essay on this, but I'm a poet not a journalist or article writer. And I have a poem and regular blog entry to post! By-the-way, it is still on the books that it is illegal to be gay in Kansas. 4779 |
