This is my first attempt to be a blogger. I hope to type a few items that you will enjoy. |
You never know what a storm will do to an environment. The combination of wind and rain is so powerful and yet necessary to bring the cosmos back into order. However when these forces act, there are some changes that may not be appreciated. Trees may be blown down. Rain might change into hail. Rain also might be enough to cause flooding which in itself is a very strong force. We, as humans are fortunate to have the resources of the media that can forcast these weather situations hours or even days in advance. We can take actions to protect ourselves. We can choose to do things or go places in spite of the potential bad weather. However the animals cannot look at the five o'clock news and be ready for bad weather. I think that some animals do have some 'sense' that tells them something is coming. They go to their safe haven. They do the best that they can do. They may experience a little fear, but in the end, they do the best they can. Today I walked around after a big rain storm. I went to Prosperity Park to visit my friend the duck, who has lived there for a long time. As I was leaving, I saw something that I thought was a dead mouse or rat. It has happened before when there has been a rain storm. The poor animals get blown out of their nest and into the pond and unfortunately, drown. I pick up the bodies and put them in the trash. Maybe some other animal would find the carcas and eat it, but I have seen things that were in the park for awhile. I figured that it was better to get the body out of the way. I went to the body and touched it with my shoe. It moved. I looked at it closer and saw that it was a young squirrel. I went immediately to a store that was nearby and got a newspaper and some napkins. I rushed back to the squirrel and wrapped it up so the napkins would soak the water out of it's fur. I had hoped that the newspaper would soak some water up also and keep the squirrel from losing any more body heat. I took the short way back home. I was fortunate that I live near a wildlife rehabilitation place. I drove there and the workers put the squirrel in an incubator. I hope and pray that it will survive. I guess my point is that if I had not gone to the park the little squirrel would have died. This is the same thing that had happened when I was present when the two baby squirrels fell out of the tree a couple of weeks ago. I am happy that I was in the right place at the right time. I hope that all of them survive and have a wonderful life. Saving lives no matter how small is a great feeling. I wish that other people would respect the lives of the great creatures that we share our planet with. Wouldn't that be nice! |
