My Birthday
my birthday

my first birthday
without my daddy
something that shouldn't happen
until one is grown.
dad missed easters
dad missed father's days
dad and i missed a christmas together
but one thing dad would never miss
was my birthday,
my special day.

like i was going to with him,
we eat at the macaroni grille
but instead of just me and him
it's  all my friends and family.
different but nice,
nice, but empty.
the cake is different,
the song is different
the feeling in my heart is different.
my fourteenth year begins differently
than any other has before
just as my life
will be so different
from this point on.
