The Very Next Day
the very next day...

is the funeral.
funny how timing works out.

i get up early.
am woken up, anyway.

i dress in all black.
it's how dad would have wanted it.

i eat a big breakfast.
which is weird, given the occasion.

the drive to the church doesn't take long enough.
i play pokémon the whole time.

we take our seats.
i don't look at anyone.

they line up to apologize and hug.
all so kind to me.

the service begins.
lots of singing and praise.

people get up.
they say nice things about dad.

i'm last.
i read my piece.

it's not scary.
in fact it feels good to have everyone's attention on me.

until then i didn't notice how many people are present.
i get a standing ovation.

dad's confidence courses through me.
his spirit accompanies me.

i'm not longer afraid.
