Do You Love Me?

When you told me who you were I smiled, it was all I could do.
When I told you what I felt you listened, it was all you could do.
In the days that are sure to follow we will remain being simple and true,
Doing all we can do to make life bearable and struggling through.
Although we may trip occasionally, life being what it is, I know,
You will always be there, as will I, no matter where we choose to go.
So can I truly tell you today, the truth that must be set free, that you must know,
Is there some way I can tell you without speaking, is there a way for the truth to show?
What would happen if I say I love you more than life itself?
What would you do if I say I love you more than I love myself?
Can our friendship stand the feelings that threaten to overtake it?
Is the wall we built together sturdy enough to take the hit?
In your eyes I can see all that comforts me, in your voice I hear all that soothes me,
In your smile I see compassion that overcomes all and I wonder what others see.
Normality can cause boredom and a slight of the hand can cause tears,
Whispered secrets can sever a heart and shouted words can bring fears.
Do you love me?



This was written during a time when a friendship I had with a slightly older man seemed to be turning into more. Looking back, I am glad that we remained friends and never entered a deeper relationship.
