The ups and downs of being single in your 30's...early 30's that is. |
A few weeks back my mom and I signed up to volunteer for an event that is taking place this afternoon. I didn't think to request it off from Dick's because 6 or so weeks ago I had a discussion with my manager and it was agreed I wouldn't be working Friday evenings during the summer since I only work 1/2 days at my day job on Fridays in the summer. I checked my schedule for this week and the only day I was scheduled was for Friday...go figure! So I decided I was going to call in. I have been there since September and have only ever called in once, so I thought I was due...in my mind anyway! All week I thought about my excuse and finally got the courage up to call last night...I'm not very good at lying. I get the phone in my hand and look up the number but sit there for nearly 5 minutes before I hit send...I was waiting for my nerves and heart to relax a bit! I swear I felt like I was calling to break up with someone...it was terrible!! I finally press SEND and find out the manager working was Jason...phew! He has only been there for about 6 weeks...he moved from another store. I get along fine with him, but we are not that close so I knew I wouldn't feel as bad lying to him! He gets on the phone and I start telling him my excuse, feeling it is coming out a little fast, but still sounding good. He stops me and said I was actually scheduled for Thursday not Friday. Shocked, I replied, "WHAT?" I asked him if someone had changed the schedule? He said there were A LOT of changes this week to the schedule and apparently no once called to let me know. He went back to look at the schedule and I was no longer scheduled for Friday, but was actually scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. TWO days I was a no-show! How does this happen? Why didn't anyone call to ask where I was?? I am a very reliable worker and would NEVER just not show up! If I am not going to be there I ALWAYS call!! I apologized to him at least 3 times and let him know that it is not in my character to blow off work like that. He then vented about his frustration with our new store manager. I'm guessing he feels a little more comfortable with me than I thought! Needless to say, when I got to work this morning I went online to fill out an application for Home Depot! |
