Flag Day and Sarah Hinson
10 Nur - 14 June

Flag Day

Weather where I am: 85º
Weather where Sarah Hinson is buried: 73º
Weather in Tunis, Tunisia this evening: 77º

The flag is flying above the grave of Sarah Hinson today, as it does every day. She is buried on a slope above Mirror Lake in Forest Lawn Cemetary. I have visited her there.

Why is today her special day? Click on this:

At Nineteenth and New Hampshire:

The golden raintree; the bouncing bet; purple conflowers bloom; she turns her tool to the left, grasps the metal cover, lifts it, wipes the dust to read the numbers, punches them in her handheld pad; the quince has set its ugly fruit; the drought set in; I turn the corner and she goes on to read another water meter; I soften the point of this number two pencil on the cork of the sweetgum tree.

Never think

Never think that Colorado's always cold
and Utah hot. The balance is a knife
edge at the top of some white peak
along the continent's divide.
Which side decides your lot.

Never think that what you know today
defines tomorrow. The road
that's seldom traveled by the day,
writhes seething through the night.
God's light illumines sorrows:
now sun, now moon, both bright.

Never think that when my face was flushed
my heart beat hard. They both respond
now to your touch across a thousand miles,
between your golden light, my silver locks,
this shared divide of smiles.

I went to my therapist today. Until my situation changes for the better, she has suggested working on piling up the positive to help balance the negative. As long as I'm being 're-bruised' on a daily basis, we'll wait to do the digging to deal with the trauma. It is a beginning.
