A Gift

Weather where I am: 79º
Weather in Fort Smith, Arkansas: 88º
Weather in Luanda, Angola: 73º
Weather in Lisboa, Portugal: 81º

I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

Yesterday I received a Merit Badge from Scottiegazelle Author Icon for being supportive. I didn't expect it, but these little surprizes are always nice.

So can you imagine how I felt today when I received an Upgraded Membership for an additional year? Last week I put it on my Wish List on a whim. Afterall, it ain't cheap. (I'll keep the Premium upgrade on there just in case, as a personal joke *Smile* It would probably be nice but it's unnecessary at the moment.)

I hesitate to mention who gifted me this unless this person says it's okay. What is interesting, is it is someone I don't know ... yet. Reminds me how Nada roped me into Blogville. (An dat rodeo ladie shur-nuff know how ta tie up dem steers *Smirk*)

Kindness does matter.

Short update on World Cup

Trinidad tied Sweden. The Soca Warriors did well, even when short a player. This puts the Swedes in a must win situation. There is always one European team that goes belly up ...

Big emotional match today between Angola and Portugal, by-the-way. Portugal wins 3-0 on paper, but the game is played on the field. I predicted a 1-1 tie.

Written from a comment "The tree holds the moon in its arms" made by a child, Teddy, to Carol Pilant and shared with me:

Holding Teddy

As father holds son,

so does the tree hold the moon
in its uplifted arms.
Caught in bare branches,
a silver fly stuck to web
hides there yet glances at us.

As nighthawk loves moonlight,

so do these arms lift the boy
by his feathery edge.
Caught in the moonbeams,
a golden fledgeling takes flight
eager he smiles down at us. [163.185]

I am reading Lang, a suspense novelette by Kjell Westö from Finland. It feels like one of the old-time detective novels in its narrative form. It is translated from Swedish but I'll need to ask AL Author Icon what liksa means unless it is Finnish.

Some wonderful quotes/lines:
- the sky was pale long after dusk and people exuded the scents of secrets and anticipation.
- a seaman's sack for a dad, a Sunday dress for mom
- it's always August
- as light and free as a lemon butterfly

The Alley by Henry's:

Unseen chirps of birds; unused wood beneath the deck; the few red-turning unripened, uneaten mulberries above my head; virginia creeper 35 feet up; uncut weeds; my untrimmed beard; a woman in a banged-up car (unconcious of it all?)

Keeping the record straight:

Two pidgeons. One thick necked glossy green and purple. The other slender. They perch together on top of the cement blocks of the wall that extends above the roof. He siddles up to her. Gives a peck. She moves to the roof below. Grey feathers are lifted by a breeze. Later they will have to preen. And I unseen or seen, record it all.

By The Toy Store:

Two pairs of yellow shoes lead their folks, wearing matching sandals. The little boys see the bubbles coming from the Teddy Bear. They try to catch a few. Their folks stop. (What are their thoughts?) The dad joins in to bat a few. The foursome moves along, but not for long, the bubbles reel them back.

The Wakarusa Fest is almost over. It is a fun affair that attracts about 50,000 for four days. A modern "hippie fest" as it were.

One attraction I would like to see: Hurra Torpedo hails from Norway. Egil Hegenberg, Aslag Guttormsgård and Kritstopher Schau play stoves, washing machines, dryers, fridges, whatever. "I know we're the best kitchen appliance rock show on Earth" one of them said. They do a cover of Bonnie Tylers 80s hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" which is reported to be awesome!
