Hello and welcome to this special edition of the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! This is a special edition because we have a very special guest with us today!

Please help me in welcoming our very own
The Milkman Author IconMail Icon

*APPLAUSE*

Milkman, you sport the pretty purple colors on your portfolio. Just how long have you been on Writing.Com?

I have been a member of this wonderful website since Decemner 17th, 2000. I remember this date well because it was the day that my writng life
changed...for the better. I had fallen on my pens and paper before and almost entirely gave it up altogether. But that is another story. Unfortunately I can't remember the kind soul who gave me my very first review but it was encouraging.

What is your favorite part of this community?

That Writing.Com is a COMMUNITY. You have two very caring individuals at the head of this website. Not only do they bend over backwards to make sure that we have all of those creative tools for writing, reading and relaxation, but they also flex their spinal cords to make sure we continually log onto the best writing website in the universe.

I'm sure you get asked this question a lot, but what is behind that screen name
of yours?

Yes I do get asked why I chose The Milkman as my username. When I joined I was employed at a small dairy barn where I, among other things,
delivered milk (from the cow, not that I would've minded driving around in one of those sleek and sporty milk trucks of yesteryear). The less known story is why people call me "Moo" especially in public forums and hotel lobbies, banquet halls and dance floors.

So why do they call you "Moo"?

It all started in the early part of 2001 when the Moderators were discussing shortening our names... lo and behold, I said they could call me anything they wanted but NOT to call me "Moo". It stuck and that is why I hear the animal noises in public.

Working on a dairy farm, I'm sure you've seen your share of cows. Have you seen Bovine Bessie, here on Writing.Com?

Once or twice. She has been on Scrolling IMs a time or two when I was there. I also feature some of her writings in the Comedy and Mystery Newsletters.

What do you think about a talking cow?

There is no such thing as a talking cow. I think Bovine Bessie sticks to typing as her form of communication.

Milkman, you host a wonderful contest here called "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window.. This contest just celebrated 2 years last month. Your contest is a big success for lasting this long, and a great tool for getting out of Writer's Block.
Do you ever have Writer's Block when trying to come up with the daily prompts? How do you overcome that?

Yes I do which is why I have several judges running the contest with me. "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window. is a group effort which is another reason that we are still going strong after two years. I also think we are the only daily contest on Writing.Com.
I have a lot of interests in my daily life so if I think hard enough I can find something that others will get inspiration from...even if I can't write the story or poem myself.

Milkman, I got the chance to meet you last year at the 2003 Convention, and it was an honor. Do you plan on attending the 2004 Convention?

Awwww schucks ma'am... I'm just an average Joe with a computer, internet connection and some wild ideas for stories and poems. Yes I am
attending this year's convention. I hope to see everyone there in my home state.

What would you have to say to someone debating on going?

I've been to both of the conventions and each time I go I have made wonderful friends during that weekend, which I know wouldn't have been possible if I stayed at home hoping that someone could find the words to actually express the
emotions of those two weekends. It really was a life-changing convention.

We are about out of time here, but what advice do you have for all the Newbies out there?

The best advice I can give you is...never stop writing no matter what may happen.

Thank you for your time, Milkman. Do you think it would be possible to get Bovine Bessie in here for an interview next month?

I think maybe you should ask her that.

Thank you The Milkman Author IconMail Icon for your time today! As for the readers, stay tuned...there's some excellent Newbie Authors to feature, and next month I'm going to see if I can't russle me up a bovine!

Thank you, esprit Author IconMail Icon! It's wonderful to hear your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the newsletter!

Good Newsletter, Sherri. Some good advice on places for newbies (and some not so newbies) to go for help and community.

I notice you recommend newbies make some in and outs. How about a letter from the editor about In and Outs, how they can benefit the newbie, and some tips on making good ones? That would probably be of use to a lot of readers.
Colin Back on the Ghost Roads Author IconMail Icon

Thanks for the wonderful suggestion, Colin! I will certainley be using it in the future!
