Letter from the editor

noticing newbies - newsletter header

Hello,
I hope that recent holiday gave everyone a chance to enjoy some fun with family and friends. I love the beautiful displays of fireworks, the smell of barbecues, the laughter of the children as they throw popper on the ground. It is a special time of the year when we can all satisfy a bit of variety. The need to "explode" things, the closeness of a meal shared with loved ones, a time that the children can be free to scream and laugh aloud with delight and fright.
But in this time I hope you all remember what the Fourth of July signifys. The signing of the Declaration of Independence, a separation of the 13 colonies from England, and the birth of a new way of life. Things are far from perfect, but I don't remember that being a part of the the Declaration. What it did promise is that if you want freedom, with alot of work you can have that.

On a lighter note, don't forget to read, write, share, and be an active part of this wonderful community. There are so many things to do, so places to go, that each and every preference will find a "home" to visit, and contribute to.

Highlighting Newbie BioBlocks

This Newsletter I found these Bio-Blocks that impressed me. I wanted to share them with you so that you might also get to know the people in our community better.
I am so happy that more and more of you are filling out this portion of your portfoilio to share with others. If you have not please take the time to write a few sentences that will give your readers some hints about your work or the focus of your work. Remember that you can always change your Bio-Block as the mood suits you, as long as it is kept G-rated.

Please give them a read and consider posting your own "welcome mat."

Ask & Answer

No questions? I have a difficult time believing that noone has a question!!! But in light of the absence of specific questions I will submit for your entertainment and writing aide something that I found to help me in my endeavor to become a better writer than I am now. Please enjoy the following.

William Safire's Rules for Writers:
Remember to never split an infinitive.
The passive voice should never be used.
Do not put statements in the negative form.
Verbs have to agree with their subjects.
Proofread carefully to see if you words out.
If you reread your work, you can find on rereading a great deal of repetition can be by rereading and editing.
A writer must not shift your point of view.
And don't start a sentence with a conjunction. (Remember, too, a preposition is a terrible word to end a sentence with.)
Don't overuse exclamation marks!!
Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.
Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.
Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.
Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.
Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun with singular nouns in their writing.
Always pick on the correct idiom.
The adverb always follows the verb.
Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague; seek viable alternatives.

In closing I encourage you to look at the left side of your screen often. Those scroll items are for all of us. An invaluable place to find the tools we need to find anything on the site, use to improve ourselves, or just to "shop". The Plug Page is great to post items for review. There are numerous Review Forums that are just asking for you to submit your items and will offer fair and honest critique.
Take some time, explore, and if you get lost, just keep a piece of paper next to with a pen, and write down where you were, and what you found. More importantly, have fun!!!

Till next time.... Write On!
