Beans, The Unsung Hero

A single meal with simple beans
A poor man's meal wrapped in a can
With cornbread cooked in grandmas kitchen
A match made in meal heaven

I am grateful for this meal, that nourished
Me in times so scarce that meals didn't come
On a regular schedule--yet full of flavor
And easy to fix, a few spices added to the mix

With meat or all alone, a filling dish
That allowed sleep to visit at night
Since hunger didn't play in my stomach
And my family had bellies full.
