Salvation is Inseparably Linked to Authority
If you ask someone, "Are you saved?" the response could be, "Why do I need to be saved? I'm going fine. Thank you very much."
If you try to clarify the question, "No. I mean, have you been eternally saved from sin by Jesus Christ, the world's only Savior?" the response could be, "I take issue with that statement because I wasn't reared in a Christian home. Jesus isn't the God we worship."
Point well taken. This brings us to the idea of this blog post.
Before we can begin to consider the "how" of being saved, we must determine the "Who" of Savior-hood.
If the scope of salvation is this life, and its physical/emotional needs, then perhaps a person, who has a strong character or strong personality type, linked with physical acumen or a store of items for personal safety and protection, could make the case for self-reliance, that needs nobody else's help.
However, if there does, indeed, exist a realm called Eternity, that is more real than anything we can experience with the five senses of this temporal life, then the Authority to Whom we give our allegiance in that forever land determines the terms of salvation (joy, peace, and hope) versus damnation (everything that is distressing and bad.)
Is that Authority the Person of Jesus Christ? Is that authority our personal experience?
Maybe someone will say, "I want a Savior other than Jesus." Then, I can't help you on that path. Jesus Christ is the Only Person I can claim as my Authority and Savior. (John 3:3)
"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" (I Corinthians 15:3-4, KJV)
