Reviews for the 2024 Reading Club originally, but I'm adding the 2025 reviews. |
Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne is a book which probably needs no introduction, but here's one anyway. When I was in sixth grade, I found a copy of this book during recess. I started reading it and within the first few pages, I was laughing. "What's so funny?" asked a girl who was near me. I gulped. I was in sixth grade and I was reading Winnie-the-Pooh. That was a sure fire path to unpopularity. Oh well. Anyway, now many years later when this challenge asked us to read a book which was read last year and I found that Winnie-the-Pooh was one of the possibilities, I decided to read it. After all, I'm not in sixth grade anymore. The book is about a boy named Christopher Robin who has several animal friends. The book is a little vague about whether these are real animals or stuffed toys, but I guess that is part of the point. Anyway, the book is a composite of several stories about these animals. The title character is, of course, a bear with a fondness for honey, but others include Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, and probably my favorite, a donkey named Eyore who is constantly pessimistic, but manages to find a certain amount of optimism when necessary. One of the better stories is about the arrival of a mother Kangaroo and her child, named Kanga and Roo respectively. There is a certain amount of mistrust from the current residents of the wood, and they concoct a plan to trick them by saying, "Aha!". Well, this book is full of smiles and takes you to a world that you wish would last a little longer. |
