RoE D4 Pt 9c “Shawn are these the pictures you took?” asked Kristin. “Yeah. Auto Club and their cars. How droll.” Kristin separated some of the pictures from the others. “Who is this woman with the brassy red hair?” “I don’t know. She just seemed out of place and be entirely too cozy with them.” Mitch picked up one of the photos. “I know this strawberry blonde hair anywhere. This is Miss Gloria Stephens, the substitute teacher. She’s always shooing me away from the school.” “I think we need to find out who this other woman is,” said Kristin. “I get the feeling she is more important to this whole mess than we realize.” “I think we got trouble,” said Dean. “There are two cop cars and some plain cars outside.” “Gather stuff up, we might have to make a run f or it,” said Darrel. Shawn joined Dean by the window. When one of the men got out of a plain car, Dean turned white as a sheet. Shawn grabbed his shoulder. “What is it boys?” asked Mitch. “It’s nothing,” said Shawn pulling Dean out of the window. “We can all meet up at the warehouse,” said Tyrel. “That sounds good,” said Mitch “I’ll make some calls.” A knock sounded on the front door. Mitch and Darrel motioned for everyone to be quiet. Darrel took Kristin’s hand. Mitch took a few steps toward the front door. Kristin moved to stop him but Darrel grabbed her and covered her mouth. “Mitch opened the door. “Yeah, what’s up?” “I’m deputy Schlep for the Caroll County Police Department. I’d like to ask you some questions.” “No problem. I was just delivered a package, and I have to get ready for work.” “This shouldn’t take long. Are you the only one here?” Mitch motioned behind his back for the others to leave. “No sir. Just me.” Shawn and Dean slipped silently out the back door and disappeared down the alley. Tyrel had taken the cue from Mitch and went out to the truck. He started it up and pulled out. “Have you noticed any unusual activity in the neighborhood recently?” Joe Marks was headed back to his car with a clipboard of pictures. He was flipping through the pages as he approached the porch. “I haven’t noticed anything,” said Mitch, “of course, I work nights, so I am usually sleeping during the day.” Joe came up the stairs with a purpose. “Excuse me. You wouldn’t happen to be,” he checked the papers, “Mitch Griffin.” “Yes, is there something wrong?” “I’d like you to come downtown for more questions. Would you come with me please?” Kristin reached out for the large door as Mitch shut it behind him........ |
