It Isn't Safe

It isn't safe,
Yes, I know,
Long before you told me so

I spend my days
On the perimeter
So that I am never near.

It isn't safe
But I am strong
Enough to weather the wrong

I can bend
With the storm
Each night my courage is reborn

It isn't safe,
That much is true
That is why I turn to you

I need a place
Where I can be
Supported and free to be me

It isn't safe
Yet I cannot go
Because of someone else I know

My family may not
The perfect one be
But I can stand, and I can see

It isn't safe,
So, I will run
Into the light when my time is done

It isn't safe
That much I know
But it will be as I grow
