Today is Super Bowl Sunday in a world far far away from Reality in the Land of Smiles and Stench (disclaimer: I do not work for the tourist bureau). SB LVII will be start at 06:30 ICT. I'm sure that there will be a crowd of expats watching; however, I wont be one of them. I do like both teams so I have no favorite. But... UStatians love to choose sides and fight fight fight. It's a basic bread-and-circus extravaganza brought to you by America, Inc. The players, no matter how talented, are overpaid. The advertisers spend a fortune ($7,000,000 for 30 seconds). Half-time cost $13,000,00 3 years ago. Tickets cost $66,000,000. Winning players will receive $157,000... each. The numbers are astronomical. This in a country that argues over minimum wage, whether the wealthy should be taxed, whether poor people are free loaders, whether health care is a basic universal right. America has its priorities. May it go the Way of Rome. P1. Professional sports - Are we reliving Roman gladiators or capitalizing profits? opinion P2. Superbowl - separate entry from Professional Sports - opinion 1.000 |
