May 2022 Prompt #5

You decide to join a book club and the first book you need to read for discussion is Les Misérables.
What is this book about? WRONG ANSWERS ONLY.

'
At the top of the summit in the Bull Mountains sits a place we call Les Miserables. The farm is the home of the Miserals. They’ve lived there about three years. Dad, mom, and five kids live in a tent up there. No running water, no toilet, no anything any of us here in town have.

Hiram and Miriam Miserals moved in with great intentions to live off the land. They brought the kids in, didn’t enroll them in school, said they were home-schooling. They said they were going to raise chickens and cattle, make some money. They said they were going to start bee-hives, make some money. They said they were going to make soap, make some money.

Every now and again they come into town. In a run-down min-van they dash into the stores, buy some thrift store clothes and trinkets, try to sell their soaps and honey, eggs and jellies. All of us in town give them a wide berth when we see them. Hiram will try to give you his knowledge about the end of the world, Miriam will try to educate you in the best way to candle an egg or an ear. Their kids will just stare at you with those big empty eyes.

It’s just enough to scare small children and make your dog bite.
