Fresh made bread, hot from the oven,
red African earth releasing its scent,
grateful to the first rains spattering the dust,
a real wood barbecue, now glowing white
and flickering under the blackened log,
warm and dark aroma of new-opened coffee,
sunshine and shadow the lavender
crushed between the fingers, eucalyptus too,
all faded, receding with the years,
old age stealing and masking the senses,
leaving little but the memory of times
when youth gloried in its freshness,
swimming in the streams of experience,
drowning in the overspill of life.
