May 2022 Prompt #1

Prompt # 1 May, 1st. '22 — A bit about the history of your town/area.

Every place has a history. Some towns were founded to support gold rushes, others were close to oceans.
What's the History of where you live? What was the early industry that made your town the place to be? Who founded your town and when?

My town is Roundup, Montana. I think that is such a Western-sounding name. It was founded in 1908 as a stop on the cattle drives in the West. Roundup is nestled between the Bull Mountains and the Musselshell River. Because of those natural geographic features, it was considered a great area to 'roundup' cattle.

After the big cattle drives, coal was discovered. After that coal discovery, the railroad found it an attractive location. The railroad brought more workers, settlers with more cattle, sheep, and homesteaders.

Currently, Roundup still relies on the Signal Peak coal mine for jobs. People commute to Billings, about an hour away, for work.

This small town, about 1,000 souls, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity for people wanting to get away from big city living and the problems that brings. We love our town and are working hard to keep the Montana values we hold dear alive and well.
