Gallows humoured


Mellifluous Marx was a male
whose speaking skills all heights could scale.
When Marx declaimed, all held their tongue;
from fear, 'twas said, of getting hung.

His famous name, his gift of gab,
his quickness with a verbal jab,
cowed all his friends, however young;
from fear, 'twas said, of getting hung.

Then came the day his voice was stilled,
when Marx by jealous hand was killed.
None mourned his death, no praises sung;
from fear, 'twas said, of getting hung.

Form Note: A Kyrielle is a French form of rhyming poetry written in quatrains, with each quatrain containing a repeating line or phrase as a refrain and lines consisting of eight syllables. The rhyme scheme used here is aabB, ccbB, ddbB, with B being the repeated line.
