February: Cake Month

On the seventh: chocolate cake
with icing laced with fudge.
I blow out candles and we eat
until we cannot budge.

The seventeenth is complicated,
carrot cake for Dad,
but Joyce needs butterscotch
if she's going to be glad.

Next in line, the twenty-fourth,
is Rose's special day,
an lemon cake with strawberries
is what she has to say.

Finally, the twenty-sixth,
and Maddie's seen to pout:
"Can't we just have cheesecake?
I'm afraid, I'm all caked out."

This is based on an actual experience. I have five siblings, and of the eight of us (six kids, two parents) five have birthdays in February. (Of the ones who don't, Mama is December, Rachel is November and Lorenzo is May) so by the time we get to the fifth birthday of the month, we have had too much cake over the month to want it again. And yes, my sister Joy was born on Dad's birthday on 17 February.
