Anniversary

It was the wind that woke me that fateful morning;
the day of my 11th wedding anniversary.
Its discordant voice chased the summer away,
and brought a foreboding chill.
It whispered anguish to the trees.

In the dawn, the shifting clouds cast an eerie glow,
like dusk, rather than the new promise
of early morning.

Something was different.
Something had changed.
Something wicked was the air,
and my heart seemed to wither away.

As the radio flickered,
it echoed the wind,
and told me life would never be the same.
Smoke, not clouds, had filled the sky,
and death was falling like rain.

The proud towers had crumbled,
and blocked out the sun, but nature was not to blame.

The world had gotten smaller,
my freedom attacked;
forever changed.
September 11, 2001.
And I will never forget.
