Baseball - Week 1
I wonder
is the ground still bare and hard
where the feet of children up to bat
or sliding in to home plate
trod down every blade of grass?

Do the echoes of their voices
still whisper in the pines
that tall and evergreen line
whose arms caught many a ball
the green wall, a barrier to home runs?

Can you still hear the sounds
of the cheers and jeers as
a ball ran aground or
a runner stole around the bases?

Children grow and so do trees
and those without memories
move into the houses of our youth.
The grass still grows green
across the manicured lawns
but in my heart
the ground is bare and hard
at home, where we stood at bat.
