The second of my collections of poems written for "Express It In Eight."
As usual these days, I choose blog format because it offers more space for the work.

The Big Bang

The idea was always unlikely
apart from being unsightly
and had no chance of winning
in being the very beginning
that all was once just a dot
that exploded in this very spot
so everything came from nothing -
methinks they were merely bluffing.

Resolution

It’s not the number of pixels
that makes up the mixel;
it’s what they must carry
individu-ally.

What you gain on the swings,
is blown on the rings.
The whole resolution
depends on contribution.

Being Late

Being late has its compensations
to add to all our reservations.

Despite our famed notoriety
it’s well short of impropriety.

And though our frames are insubstantial
our gains are surely nonfinancial.

For now from cares we’re all released
advantage lies in being deceased.

The Moving Finger Writes

Signs of the times
like hackneyed rhymes,
beating their drums
as painful thumbs.

Some strange message,
cryptic passage,
autocrat words,
compliant herds.

Empty

Out west the land goes on forever
in open plains, a vast savanna,
no hindrance there to sight or dreams
and freedom forms eternal themes.

Out there the spirit roams untied,
no hindrance to the view applied
and emptiness is full of meaning,
the soul replete with endless cleaning.

A curtain blows in the breeze to touch a table.

Nemesis

The curtains billow with the breeze from an open window
like sails set in the darkness of a moonless night
they caress the stiff form of the high table in attendance
sentry to the silent room lit by a beam from an errant streetlight.

Evidence of bedtime’s last cocoa ritual of long ago
a cup and saucer braves the flow of air and movement
a stalwart figure on the lonely height of spotlight frozen
suspended time now prepares the waiting fate for action.

Reasons to be Cheerful - Part 94

Tomorrow knows
just one day more
than what today
has figured out.

And so I learn
from day to day -
it seems I’m just
an abacus.

Understanding

Understanding knows of what you speak
lives in the places that we seek
thrives on learning all that’s real
pays the bill while others steal

Stoops to take the path most humble
treads with grace and doesn’t stumble
smiles so sadly at man’s errors
blunts the teeth of the worst of terrors.

Pilot

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
aviation knight of the early days,
The Little Prince of the upper air,
Wind, Sand and Stars aloft,
you winged our dreams on high,
carried us over the Andes,
opened our eyes to vistas new,
and died eschewing the ground.

A chick with half an egg still stuck to it.

Martha struts the catwalk in the very latest of headgear from Paris.
In spite of the mockery, Henry stuck with his ambition to be a turtle.
Really, Sandra, you need to come out of your shell.
Professor Egbert strides back to the drawing board after the failed test of his new bulletproof armour.
Never mind the quality, consider the wonderful Japanese artwork.
They warned me that, if I ran for president, I’d have eggs thrown at me.
You won’t be laughing when the sky falls on our heads.
Go backpacking, they said, go backpacking.
