What do we have in common?
A Unification of the Human Species

Well I
wake up
which is a theme I can always defer to
being that it
happens every morning,
I suppose.
It hasn’t a peculiarity to it, I
behave the same as always.
My foot slowly memorizing the outline of my
carpet,
tracing along to discover
the part of the floor that is not too cold for stepping on.
I
pull the door from its place and
glide it over a metal surface of tracking
keeping it from being anything but a door.
An involuntary metal casing
or
caste system.
My rhythms bring me to the bathroom as naturally as
turtle’s hearts are beating out the sound of
which way
which way
which way
that earth is waiting, petulant earth,
for her to bestow crystal drops of life in the sand that
only she
dug up. (Now tell her she needs a man).
And I do what my life minus one year will
equal and
pull back the shower curtain before feeling
safe
in my own bathroom.
Because fear is a
learned behavior and
I’ve never had a
head for numbers.
