Perspectives on a Rainy Day



I
Thunder rumbles off in the distance.
Memories of the gods bowling, of the children
cuddling in under fuzzy blankets, of their shouts of
'Rattle Rattle, Thunder Clatter--Boom, Boom, BOOM!
Today, the pup quakes under my desk,
rattling. She does not approve.

Children long grown; yet still their voices echo.
I smile, curled up with the pup on the couch
tucked under fuzzy paws and my dragon blanket.
Cup of coffee steaming, favored book open on my lap,
I listen to rain drumming its beat on the roof,
doze midst light show through the pines.

Gentle rains spawn deluge just in time
to leave the grocery store. Prompts a run
to toss bags in the back seat. I'm glad no wriggling
littles today to buckle in. I could have waited
in the store with the rest of the crowd.
I'm not sweet enough to melt-- it is only rain.

Drops sparkle through a yellowed sky
and the rain is warm, just enough to dampen
as I sit on my balcony watching waves
and a whale dancing in the distance.
Rainy days while on vacation are no issue.
Rain won't last, tis Maui rain afterall, and rainbows will follow.

Yearning for Maui rains over mid-September torrent.
I drive home with wipers flashing, barely keeping
up with the downpour. The ice cream won't melt
too much as I sit in the driveway. Contemplate the dash
through over-filled garage: can I make it in one trip?
I smile knowing not. Hibiscus blooms umbrella in the garden.

Cozy in dry jammies, toweled hair curling wildly,
I sit at my desk, pup curled, warming chilled feet.
My day, today, is but another poem. Sky is smiling blue.
My daughter calls. She was thinking of me
during the storm, hearing echoes of childhood chant.
Tells me she loves me. What a lovely day.
