What sleep is this,  I
cannot take?
Would hard day’s toil
not rest it make?
Yet breath won’t slow
instead soft gasps
with open mouth
refrain
from pain
that lasts.

What dream is this, I
can’t escape?
Would far from dreams
my sleeping take?
Yet here I lie
On pillowy cloud
fine lines of tears
trickle
tickle
toward my ears.

What love is this, I
cannot find?
Would that she lived
could ease my mind?
Yet dreams still stay
as memories vast
in lovers grasp
with I above
and she below
we yield to sleep
at last.
