This poem describes how I felt in a past relationship.
Who are you to feel you are above me?
To think that you have a divine right to control me-me
Me is most definitely not you
I am an individual with the right to decide for myself
For to be me is a gift that you have tried to take away
And O’ you almost succeeded
But tisk the control you had of me was a fault of mine
Like a weak little girl I allowed you to treat me like your pet
To sit, stay, listen…
You used your words, your hands, and your strength as means to keep me in order
But let me say this to you
Listen to my voice and hear my words for I will not grant you another listen
You will never possess power over me again
For too long I have sat back and said nothing
I took the blows and kept on going
As you watched me cry with fear and frustration
You thought you had me forever
But what you failed to see is that with every tear lost
Strength was gained…
And you have no idea of the power I have acquired
The strength I have gained is not what you would expect
In our final days I was able to free myself from your grasp
And my leaving you took every ounce of strength in my body
I am a strong woman, I am a better me
Without you
