once a song by the airborne toxic event, now a poem

You stand alone amongst a crowded room
Under bright bar lights and immersed in song
The piano a melancholy soundtrack to her smile
You try to lose yourself for a minute or two

But you know she is watching,
She’s laughing, she’s turning,
She’s holding her tonic like a cross.
And the room is suddenly spinning

She walks over and asks how you are
Just so you can smell her perfume
And remember her lying naked in your arms
And there’s a change in your emotions

Memories come rushing in like feral waves
Like the curl of your bodies
Like two perfect circles entwined
Across your frayed mind, tearing you into two

You feel hopeless and homeless—
Lost in the haze of the wine.
She leaves with someone you don’t know
But she makes sure you saw her…

She looks right at you and bolts
As she walks out the door
You’re blood boiling, your stomach in ropes
And your friends say “what is it—you look like you’ve seen a ghost!”

And you walk under the street lights—
Too drunk to notice everyone staring at you
You don’t care what you look like
The world is falling around you

You just have to see her,
You know that she’ll break you in two
