a tribute to my elderly friends

There is a certain comfort
that comes with ageing,
when one embraces the natural state
of the inevitable.
These wise ones don’t fight it,
but allow themselves to be...

These are the ones who do not try to change
what they know they cannot.
Their standards remain high,
but they have stopped expecting more
than what others can give.

These people don’t waste time and energy
on the things that don’t really matter.
They know the value of a dollar,
because they have fought for it,
they have lived for it,
and they have watched some die for it.

They understand cause and effect.
They understand that thoughts produce feelings
and feelings produce behaviors.
They hold themselves accountable
for their own actions,
for their own thoughts.
They know responsibility.

They can see the dark side of life,
and sometimes they have been that dark side.
But they also know the light,
how to find it,
and how to be it if they try.
These are the ones who have truly loved,
who have truly lost.

They stop to look for the beauty
in everything.
But often times they are the beauty...
This generation of yesterday,
soon to pass away,
soon to be forgotten.

But I shall not forget them.
