A parents thoughts on the first day at school
I could see the doubt in her eyes on that still autumn day.
The mind filled with thoughts, of hope and dismay
Is this really the best and right thing to allow?
Am I sure, are we sure, it should happen right now
We have journeyed together, on the road well travelled
Yet our journey unique, on a new path unravelled.

As we passed through the gates and waited in line
I could not help but notice the faces around
All bearing the same colour painted joy and sweet sadness
Keeping us safe from the surrounding madness

We said our goodbyes and sent love in sweet embraces
Knowing we were right from the smiles on young faces
Our fledgling has grown and flew from the nest
To experience the world with new friends of the best.
Gone from sight but still in our heart
We will be back this way before it is dark

That was our road, travelled by others
Sons and daughters, Fathers and mothers
Ours son’s first day at school is finally done
Now we go home before night hides the sun
