A day to Remember
By: Justin Highland
The old man sat in a worn wooden chair
A face full of wrinkles and uncombed hair
She walked in the room
A tray of meds in her hands
A beautiful thing with brown eyes and a tan
She walked to the window where the old man was sitting
She held out the meds
He said I’ll have none of those things
“Sir please don’t  make this hard for me”
“You’re my last room to visit then I get to leave”
“ I’m in quite a hurry and I’m running late”
“It’s Valentine’s Day and I have a date”
“I know what day it is”
the old man said
“ That is just why I don’t want those meds”
“You see it was one year ago”
“ I lost the love of my life”
“She was my best friend”
“She was my wife”
“When I take those things my mind falls into a slumber”
“This is a day I like to remember”
The young nurse sighed and left the meds right beside him
“I’ll let you decide if you want to take them”
The old man smiled
Said; “Thank you dear”
“Now you’re late for your date”
“You work is done here”
The next day nurse went to visit the man
A tray full of meds rest in here hands
She walked to the window where the old man was sitting
There was no response
No signs of life
Just a note that read
I’m out with my wife
